sustainability

We are on a mission to help protect our oceans. As you are reading this, there are 5.25 trillion tonnes of plastic in our seas. The oceans’ rich biodiversity is at threat with over 100,000 marine mammals and 1 million birds killed each year due to ingesting or entanglement of plastic pollution. Not to mention the damage it is causing to the water quality, marine plants and microbes. Furthermore, plastic pollution is a threat to food quality and safety, human health and climate change. AKA the sea needs our help urgently!

Samudra’s Special Fabric

Up to 70% of macroplastics (large pieces of plastic) in our oceans are from the fishing industry, many boats discard unwanted fishing nets and lines into the open water. Through the collection of this waste via ghost diving, our supplier ECONYL® regenerates ocean plastic into a fiber which is then used to make up a variety of high-spec fabrics. Our particular fabric is sourced from Italy and is considered a luxury performance material, it is both durable and technical, perfect for performance activewear and swimwear (our pieces double up as swimwear- cool huh!).

Think of us as ocean plastic pirates, collecting waste, and transforming it into Samudra treasure!

Read more about it here. It performs exactly the same as new nylon and can be regenerated again and again. By using ECONYL®, we are reducing the use of crude oil, CO2 emissions and the global warming impact of nylon by up to 90% compared to virgin nylon. Think of us as ocean plastic pirates, collecting waste and transforming it into Samudra treasure!

We hope that one day there will be no more plastic left to collect from the oceans and instead we can keep regenerating existing nylon into our activewear, helping the fashion industry to become a more circular economy.

Microplastics

As our products are made from regenerated plastic, there is a risk they may release microplastics when washed. We recommend cleaning them only when absolutely necessary and using a Guppyfriend (hyperlink to their website) washing bag as they stop microplastics from entering the ecosystem.

Samudra’s Ethos

Our Samudra pieces are not the only sustainable element of the brand. We aim to practice sustainability in every business sector when creating beautiful activewear. From concept, to design, packaging, labelling, exclusively working with suppliers with a matching ethos and through donating 5% of profits to female-focused conservation projects, we hope every aspect of our business can be labelled “sustainable”.
